For the Portage Central women's first varsity soccer game, the season started very well. The girls traveled to Grand Rapids to play Forest Hills Central. The final score was 1 - 0 in favor of Portage Central. The first goal of the season was scored in the first half by Jessie Noble and assisted by Ashleigh Carpentier; both team mates are sophmores.
This weekend, the girls Varsity soccer team played 2 one hour games against Midland Dow and TCC. The final score of both games was 3-1 and 2-0 respectively. All the teams put forth a great effort and it made for a wonderful day to watch some soccer.

The first goal of the game was scored at 8:47 by PC's junior Emily Berner. She was assisted by senior Kristy Arnett off a flip throw-in. The following goal was a little before half-time at 31:49. The ball came from freshman Anne Rose and passed to senior Kristy Arnett who came from the right side of the top of the arc and was able to put the ball in the top left corner of the net. That ended the half with PC two over BCC. A third goal by PC was scored 51:03 into the game. Senior Kristy Arnett yet again from a restart was able to cross the ball from a corner kick where she found the head of senior Nikki Hartel and the ball went straight to the back of the net. The last and final goal was another restart corner kick 62:35 into the game. The ball came from a corner kick by junior Meredith Alexander where freshman Megan Brown around 5 yards in front of the front post flicked it past her and sophmore Ashleigh Carpentier put the final goal in. The ending score was a 4 - 0 Portage Central victory of Battle Creek Central.
Throughout the game, it was back and forth. Neither Central nor Northern could do anything offensively and there were no really successful attacks. On a throw-in for PC around 10 yards from the corner flag, Portage Central senior Kristy Arnett backed up for a flip throw-in that the crowd had been yearning to see. The ball reached around the 6 yard box where the ball met the head of a Northern defender and off a lucky bounce for PC the ball went into the back of the net. Junior Emily Berner was the PC forward putting pressure on the Northern player with the own goal. Under the official scoreboard, the goal will be going to Emily Berner. Both teams put up a ferocious fight in such cold weather. The final score was a 1-0 victory for Portage Central.
Monday nights 2-0 victory over BC Lakeview leaves the Spartans with an 8-1 record and PC still undefeated. Junior Meredith Alexander and Senior Nikki Hartel each scored a header that began from Kristy Arnett's flip throw-in. Two underclassman were brought up from the JV A team, Heidi Roeder and Ellen Molenaart, due to injuries to several varsity players. They both made significant contributions to the game yet still another injury forced PC to lose Jessica Noble to a sprained elbow. The Spartans had a 10 to 7 shot advantage in the first half, yet Central was able to pick up their game and end with a 12 to 26 shot advantage.
